Summary: 

Manage a machine and model shop supporting production equipment, engineering prototypes, and small production runs.  Envision and enable growth of the shop’s capabilities going forward. Interface directly with stakeholders as needed to communicate needs and opportunities to benefit nLIGHT capabilities.

Facilitate a group of one to two other machinists to make precision prototype parts and tooling from raw stock material, rework parts and equipment as needed, and coordinate activities on a day to day basis. Interface with engineering staff on the feasibility of design of machined parts and assemblies. Work from design drawings, sketches and CAD models. Design and construct tools, jigs and fixtures to enable part machining needs while meeting schedule objectives. Work to streamline practices and procedures to enable high quality and timely deliverables. Empower team members to do the same. 

Responsibilities:

  • Plan sequence of operations, lay out work, set up and operate machine tools such as manual and conversational 3 axis mills, lathes, grinders, bandsaws, etc.
  • Must have experience and be able to prioritize job scheduling for multiple internal customers.
  • Perform machining operations in construction and repair of machined facility parts, tools, developmental and experimental parts or other related machine work.
  • Perform machining operations required in fabricating dies, jigs, gauges, fixtures, and for maintenance as requested.
  • Perform machining operations from drawings, sketches, engineering drawings, and oral instructions.
  • Perform difficult and complex machining involving exacting and coordinated tolerances.
  • Determine cutting tools to be used and methods of holding and aligning work. Improvise and adapt tooling, attachments, and other machining aids.
  • Perform progressive machining operations as required.
  • Plan and set up machine tools to fully utilize machine's capacity and minimize amount of machining and number of setups required.
  • Check own work for conformance to specifications. Check the work of others as well.
  • Utilize a working knowledge and application of shop mathematics.
  • Perform bench operations as required.
  • Ability to program ACU-RITE Control Systems with MasterCAM or similar software packages.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain machine shop equipment.
  • Train and mentor junior staff on tasks listed above. 
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned. 

Requirements:

  • 10+ years of machine shop experience
  • HS Diploma/GED required, Associates Degree Preferred 
  • 2+ years of experience managing small teams with demonstrated success mentoring team members
  • Experience working with SolidWorks or similar 3D software, interpreting 2D and 3D machine part drawings
  • Working knowledge of Dimensioning and Tolerancing standard ASME Y14.5M
  • Well-versed with 3 axis milling machines, lathes, and other shop equipment
  • Knowledge of metal alloys and plastics commonly used in industry as well as plating technologies
